What is Muhurtha?

Muhurtha (முகூர்த்தம்) is the astrological selection of an auspicious date and time to begin an important activity. The idea: start with the cosmic flow, not against it. A well-chosen muhurtha doesn't guarantee success, but it removes invisible obstacles that might stall the event.

1. Tithi (திதி — Lunar Day)

30 tithis in a lunar month. Good tithis: Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dasami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Trayodashi (13th). Avoid Chaturthi (4th), Navami (9th), Chaturdashi (14th), and Amavasya (new moon).

2. Vara (வாரம் — Weekday)

• Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — best for most events
• Tuesday, Saturday — avoid for marriage and new beginnings
• Sunday — good for royal/government work, avoid for starting a journey

3. Nakshatra (நட்சத்திரம்)

Each event has favourable nakshatras. Example — for marriage: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Swati, Anuradha, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati. For housewarming: Rohini, Mrigashira, Chitra, Revati.

4. Yoga and Karana

These are the panchanga components that refine the muhurtha. Avoid Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha, Vaidhriti yogas.

• Seasons: Avoid monsoon (Adi month). Prefer Chithirai, Vaikasi, Aani, Aavani, Aippasi, Karthikai, Thai, Masi, Panguni.
• Best Nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara, Swati, Anuradha, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.
• Avoid: Guru-moudhyam (Jupiter combustion) and Sukra-moudhyam (Venus combustion) — Tamil tradition strictly avoids marriage during these periods.

Griha Pravesh (கிரகப்பிரவேசம் — Housewarming)
