Why 10 Poruthams Matter in Tamil Marriage

In Tamil Nadu, 10 Poruthams (also called Thirumana Porutham) form the backbone of traditional marriage matching. Unlike the North Indian "36 Gunas" system, Tamil matching focuses on 10 specific compatibilities between the bride's and groom's Nakshatras and Rasis. A minimum of 6 out of 10 Poruthams is considered acceptable.

The 10 Poruthams Explained

1. Nakshatra Porutham (நட்சத்திர பொருத்தம்)

Checks compatibility between the bride's and groom's birth stars. Some nakshatra pairs create "dina dosham" and should be avoided.

2. Rasi Porutham (ராசி பொருத்தம்)

Compares the moon signs. Same-rasi matches generally avoided; best pairings use specific rasi distance rules (2-12, 3-11, 5-9, 7-7 are favourable).

3. Dina Porutham (தின பொருத்தம்)

Predicts health and longevity of the couple. Based on counting from the girl's star to the boy's star.

4. Gana Porutham (கண பொருத்தம்)

Each nakshatra belongs to one of 3 ganas — Deva (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshasa (demonic). Same-gana or Deva-Manushya pairs are best.

5. Yoni Porutham (யோனி பொருத்தம்)

Each nakshatra is assigned an animal yoni (tiger, elephant, horse, etc). Sexual compatibility and mutual attraction are predicted by yoni friendship.

6. Rajju Porutham (ரஜ்ஜு பொருத்தம்)

Ensures longevity of marriage. Nakshatras are grouped into 5 rajjus (head, neck, stomach, thigh, feet). Same rajju = avoidance.

7. Vedhai Porutham (வேதை பொருத்தம்)

Some nakshatras are "afflicted" by others (vedha). Pairing vedha nakshatras can cause constant quarrels.

8. Vasya Porutham (வசிய பொருத்தம்)

Predicts mutual affection and whether the partner will come under control. Based on rasi groups (human, beast, bird, etc).

9. Mahendra Porutham (மகேந்திர பொருத்தம்)

Predicts children and progeny. Counted from the girl's star to the boy's star in multiples of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25.

10. Stree Dirgha Porutham (ஸ்திரீ தீர்க்க பொருத்தம்)

Ensures the wife's welfare and happiness. Boy's star should be past the 9th star from the girl's star.

Beyond Porutham — Don't Skip These

• Mangala Dosha (Sevvai Dosham) — Mars in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 houses. Both partners should match on this.
• Dasa Sandhi — check if both are in a transitional period with potential troubles.
• 7th house analysis — the marriage house in both charts should be healthy.
• Navamsa compatibility — the D9 chart is as important as the main chart.
