Rahu Kalam, Yama Gandam, Gulikai — Daily Inauspicious Times Explained
ராகு காலம், எம கண்டம், குளிகை — தினசரி அசுப நேரங்கள்
What is Rahu Kalam?
Rahu Kalam (ராகு காலம்) is a daily 90-minute period considered inauspicious for starting new activities — signing contracts, marriage ceremonies, buying property, travelling, or beginning important meetings. It is ruled by Rahu, the "shadow planet" of obstruction.

Yama Gandam (எம கண்டம்)
Yama Gandam is another 90-minute daily inauspicious period, named after Yama, the god of death. It is even more strictly avoided for travel — beginning a journey during Yama Gandam is said to invite accidents or bad news. Timings rotate by weekday just like Rahu Kalam, but at different hours.
Yama Gandam by Day

Gulikai Kalam (குளிகை காலம்)
Gulikai is a 90-minute period ruled by Saturn's son Gulika (Mandi). Less inauspicious than Rahu Kalam, but still avoided for starting long-term commitments like weddings or business ventures.
How Are These Calculated?
The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal parts (each ~90 min). Each weekday assigns Rahu, Yama, and Gulikai to specific parts. Because sunrise varies by season and location, exact timings shift. Our Panchanga auto-calculates for your city.
What Activities to Avoid
- Starting a new job, business, or course
- Signing legal documents or contracts
- Marriage ceremonies (kalyanam, reception)
- Buying real estate, vehicles, or jewellery
- Travel — especially for important purposes
- Starting a journey away from home
What's Still Okay During Rahu Kalam
- Routine work already in progress (continuing is fine, only starting is avoided)
- Prayer, meditation, chanting mantras
- Lighting lamps, visiting temples (especially Durga or Kali temples)
- Eating meals, sleeping, daily personal activities
Can You Offset Rahu Kalam?
If you absolutely must start something during Rahu Kalam, traditional remedies include:
- Chanting Durga or Kali mantra 108 times
- Lighting a sesame-oil lamp facing south
- Donating black items — sesame seeds, iron, or black cloth
- Postponing by even a few minutes past the Rahu Kalam window
