Dasa Bhukti — How Timing Works in Tamil Astrology
தசா புக்தி — ஜோதிடத்தில் காலம் எப்படி செயல்படுகிறது
Why Dasa Is the "Clock" of Your Horoscope
A birth chart shows what can happen. Dasa shows when. Two people can have an identical planet in the 10th house (career), but one becomes CEO at 35 while the other struggles until 50 — because their Dasa sequences are different. The Vimshottari Dasa system is the most widely used timing method in Tamil and Vedic astrology.
The 120-Year Vimshottari Cycle
Every person's Dasa is calculated from their Janma Nakshatra (birth star). The Moon's nakshatra lord starts the sequence. Each of the 9 planets gets a fixed number of years:
| Planet | Mahadasa Years |
|---|---|
| Ketu (கேது) | 7 |
| Sukra / Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | 20 |
| Suryan / Sun (சூரியன்) | 6 |
| Chandran / Moon (சந்திரன்) | 10 |
| Sevvai / Mars (செவ்வாய்) | 7 |
| Rahu (ராகு) | 18 |
| Guru / Jupiter (குரு) | 16 |
| Sani / Saturn (சனி) | 19 |
| Budhan / Mercury (புதன்) | 17 |
Total: 7 + 20 + 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 = 120 years.
Dasa vs Bhukti vs Antara
- Mahadasa — the main planetary period (e.g., Guru Dasa for 16 years). Sets the overall theme of life.
- Bhukti / Antardasa — sub-period within the mahadasa (e.g., Guru-Sani for ~2.5 years). Fine-tunes the theme.
- Antara / Pratyantar — sub-sub-period (few months). Pinpoints specific events.
Example: If you're running Guru Mahadasa – Sani Bhukti – Budhan Antara, it means Jupiter's long-term blessing is filtered through Saturn's delay and Mercury's intellect in that specific month.
How to Read Your Current Dasa — 3 Questions
1. Is the Mahadasa lord well placed?
Check the Mahadasa planet in your birth chart. Is it in a good house (1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11)? Exalted? With a friendly planet? If yes, the period is generally good.
2. What does the Bhukti lord do?
The Bhukti (sub-period) lord can amplify or suppress the Mahadasa. Example: a great Guru Dasa can still be tough during a Sani Bhukti if Saturn is afflicted in your chart.
3. Are the two houses "friendly"?
Check the house owned by the Mahadasa lord vs the Bhukti lord. If they are in mutual kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or trikona (1, 5, 9), the period gives results. If in 6/8 (shashtashtaka), expect friction.
Good and Bad Bhukti Combinations
Generally favourable:
- Guru – Guru (self-Bhukti of a benefic in a good house)
- Sukra – Chandran (money and emotional peace together)
- Budhan – Guru (intellectual growth, education gains)
Generally cautious:
- Sani – Rahu or Rahu – Sani (delays compounded with confusion)
- Sevvai – Ketu (accident-prone, sudden conflicts)
- Sani Sade Sati + Sani Dasa combined (classic "difficult period")
Why Predictions Sometimes Fail
Novice astrologers predict based on the planet alone — "Sani Dasa is bad." Not true. Saturn in the 1st house is different from Saturn exalted in the 7th. Context beats generalization. Always look at (a) which house the planet occupies, (b) which house it owns, (c) its strength, (d) which planets aspect it.
Gochara (Transit) + Dasa = Events
Dasa alone doesn't trigger an event. You need a transit (current sky) activating the Dasa lord. When Jupiter in the sky aspects your Dasa planet, that's the moment the promise in your chart gets delivered.
