How to Read a Tamil Jathagam — Complete Beginner Guide
தமிழில் ஜாதகம் படிப்பது எப்படி — முழு வழிகாட்டி
What is a Tamil Jathagam?
A Jathagam (ஜாதகம்) is a Tamil birth chart that maps the position of planets at the exact moment of your birth. It is calculated using your date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth. Tamil astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and Thirukanitha Panchangam — a calculation method based on modern astronomy, more accurate than the traditional Vakya system.
The Three Things You Need Before Reading
1. Your Lagna (லக்னம் / Ascendant)
Lagna is the rasi (zodiac sign) rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time. It defines who you are — your body, personality, and overall life direction. The first house of your chart is always your Lagna.
2. Your Rasi (ராசி / Moon Sign)
Rasi is the sign where the Moon was placed at birth. It represents your mind, emotions, and instinctive nature. When someone asks "what's your rasi?", they mean your moon sign. Dasa calculations are based on rasi, not lagna.
3. Your Nakshatra (நட்சத்திரம் / Birth Star)
Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions. It divides each rasi into parts and is crucial for marriage matching (porutham), naming ceremonies, and muhurtha selection.
The 12 Houses (பாவம்) and What They Mean
- 1st house — Self, body, appearance (தனு)
- 2nd house — Wealth, speech, family (தனம்)
- 3rd house — Siblings, courage, short journeys (சகோதர)
- 4th house — Mother, home, vehicles, happiness (மாத்ரு / சுக)
- 5th house — Children, intelligence, past karma (புத்ர)
- 6th house — Enemies, debts, health issues (ஸத்ரு / ரோக)
- 7th house — Marriage, spouse, partnerships (களத்ர)
- 8th house — Longevity, hidden things, transformation (ஆயுஸ்)
- 9th house — Father, fortune, dharma (பாக்ய / பித்ரு)
- 10th house — Career, status, father (ராஜ / கர்ம)
- 11th house — Gains, elder siblings, friends (லாப)
- 12th house — Losses, foreign travel, moksha (வ்யய)
Reading Your Chart: A Simple 5-Step Method
- Identify your Lagna — the rasi in house 1. This is your "starting point."
- Check the Lagna lord — which planet owns your Lagna rasi. Where that planet sits tells you your life focus.
- Find the Moon — its house position colours your mental state.
- Look at Jupiter (Guru) — the "great benefic." Jupiter's house brings growth and blessing.
- Check Saturn (Sani) — where Saturn sits, delays and lessons appear.
Common Mistakes Beginners Make
- Confusing Lagna with Rasi — they are different and both matter.
- Ignoring Dasa periods — planetary positions alone don't predict timing. The current Dasa-Bhukti filters what manifests.
- Reading only the main Rasi chart — the Navamsa (D9) chart is essential for marriage predictions.
- Relying only on sun sign (western style) — Tamil astrology uses the moon sign as the primary rasi.
Tamil vs Western Astrology — The Difference
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to seasons. Tamil (and Vedic) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to actual star positions. This causes a ~23° offset. Your "sun sign" in Western horoscopes will usually be one rasi earlier than your Tamil rasi.
